The origin of this form of combat has its roots deeply embedded during the 15th<\/sup> and 16th<\/sup> century when Europeans first began settle in the United States of America. It was during this period that a variety of wrestling styles were regularly practiced by the \u201cNative Indian Community\u201d. \u00a0Furthermore, it was during this period that settlers from England began developing a style which was initially similar to Greco-Roman wrestling, which was later modified into a less restrictive form. In addition, migrants belonging to Ireland brought a \u201ccollar and elbow\u201d style of wrestling into the country. In this way wrestling gradually began to gain popularity throughout the country during the 18th<\/sup> and 19th<\/sup> centuries. It was eventually during the 20th<\/sup> century in the year 1903 that the first intercollegiate wrestling competition was organized between Yale University and Columbia University. In 1905, the Eastern Intercollegiate Wrestling Association organized a tournament, and it was this competition that led to more and more college, high school, and university students participating in competitive wrestling bouts throughout the country which gradually gave rise to \u201cCollegiate Wrestling\u201d.<\/p>\n b.
