This \u201ctraditional\u201d martial art form is said to have originated from Colombia. Apparently, this martial art form within Colombia has been passed from one generation to another via the \u201ctraditional master and pupil relationship\u201d. Furthermore, this form of martial arts during the early 20<sup>th<\/sup> century was mainly practiced by the Afro-Colombian communities belonging to Gran Cauca and Tolima region.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong style=\"font-size: 1rem;\">a. History\/origin of the Grima:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">There exist four \u201ctheories\u201d in Colombia with regards to the origin of Grima. They are as follows:<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong style=\"font-size: 1rem;\">1. Theory 1:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u00a0This theory states that, this form of martial art was developed by the African slaves who were recruited to Colombia to work in the mines.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong style=\"font-size: 1rem;\">2. Theory 2:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">According to this theory, the Grima was introduced into the Colombian society by \u201cEuropean\u201d sword fighters who arrived in the country during the colonial rule.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong style=\"font-size: 1rem;\">3. Theory 3:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">As per this theory, the Grima is supposed to have been developed by the African slaves after being inspired by the European sword fighters.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong style=\"font-size: 1rem;\">4. Theory 4:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">This theory states, that Grima was essentially passed on to the Colombian soldiers by the Spanish during the \u201cWars of Independence\u201d.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong style=\"font-size: 1rem;\">b. Weapon used in the Grima:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The weapons mainly used in the Grima would include sticks, lances, and knives. In addition, \u201cmachetes\u201d are very commonly used.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong style=\"font-size: 1rem;\">c. Technique involved in the Grima and training availability:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">In terms of technique, the Grima comprises of a variety of styles known as \u201cJuegos\u201d. A few styles used commonly are Sombra Caucana, Palo Negro, Cubano, Espa\u00f1ol, Frances, Relancino, Venezolano, Coste\u00f1o etc. Now each style differs from the other in the kind of body posture, range, footwork, choreography, and tactics used.
