infection is a fungal infection that causes irritation, discharge and intense itchiness of the vagina and the vulva \u2014 the tissues at the vaginal opening.<\/span>\n\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Also called vaginal candidiasis, vaginal yeast infection affects up to 3 out of 4 women at some point in their lifetimes. Many women experience at least two episodes.<\/span>\n\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A vaginal yeast infection isn&#8217;t considered a sexually transmitted infection. But, there&#8217;s an increased risk of vaginal yeast infection at the time of first regular sexual activity. There&#8217;s also some evidence that infections may be linked to mouth to genital contact (oral-genital sex).<\/span>\n\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Medications can effectively treat vaginal yeast infections. However, natural fluctuations in hormone levels, especially those of\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.medicalnewstoday.com\/articles\/277177.php\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">estrogen<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0and\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.medicalnewstoday.com\/articles\/277737.php\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">progesterone<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, in the week or two before menstruation are likely responsible for the symptoms.<\/span>\n\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Estrogen and progesterone levels decrease dramatically after\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.medicalnewstoday.com\/articles\/150870.php\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ovulation<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. This could play a major role in the development of PMS symptoms.<\/span>\n\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The drop in estrogen levels may affect a person\u2019s\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.medicalnewstoday.com\/kc\/serotonin-facts-232248\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">serotonin<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0levels. Serotonin is a brain chemical that helps regulate mood, sleep, and appetite, all of which PMS affects.<\/span>\n\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Severe or debilitating PMS symptoms are not common, and they may indicate the presence of an underlying health condition.
