      The diagnosis of a refractive error is usually confirmed by an <\/span>eye care professional<\/span><\/a> during an <\/span>eye examination<\/span><\/a> using a large number of lenses of different optical powers, and often a <\/span>retinoscope<\/span><\/a> (a procedure entitled <\/span>retinoscopy<\/span><\/i><\/a>) to measure objectively in which the person views a distant spot while the clinician changes the lenses held before the person’s eye and watches the pattern of reflection of a small light shone on the eye. Following that “objective refraction” the clinician typically shows the person lenses of progressively higher or weaker powers in a process known as <\/span>subjective refraction<\/span><\/i><\/a>. <\/span>Cycloplegic<\/span><\/a> agents are frequently used to more accurately determine the amount of refractive error, particularly in children.<\/span><\/p>\n

      Myopia\u00a0 or near sightedness <\/b>is a condition where close objects are clear, and distant objects are blurred.<\/span>\n<\/span> A myopic eye is longer than normal or has a cornea that is too steep, as a result of which the light rays focus in front of the retina.<\/span><\/p>\n

      What is Astigmatism?<\/b><\/p>\nAstigmatism(cylindrical errors) usually occurs when the front surface of the eye, the cornea, has an asymmetric curvature.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\nNormally the cornea is smooth and equally curved in all directions, and light entering the cornea is focused equally on all planes, or in all directions. In astigmatism, the front surface of the cornea is curved more in one direction than in another. This abnormality may result in vision that is much like looking into a distorted, wavy mirror. Usually, astigmatism causes blurred vision at all distances.<\/p>\n
